The Pencil Museum in Keswick celebrates its 30th Birthday in May and to mark this milestone is holding a special 2-day event to ‘Celebrate Art in Cumbria’ on Sunday 29th and Bank Holiday Monday 30th May.

The event is completely free and will include artist workshops and demonstrations, galleries of artist’s drawings, competitions, raffles, children’s activities and lots more. It is sure to be a fun packed weekend for all!

Keswick has a long and proud history of pencil making and the first recorded pencil factory opened in 1832 just before Queen Victoria came to the throne.

In May 1981 the museum opened its doors to take visitors on a fascinating journey through the unique history of The Cumberland Pencil Company, the story of pencil making and giving them the opportunity to see, what was then, the Longest Graphite Pencil in the World!

Originally expecting to receive 20,000 visitors a year The Pencil Museum now welcomes on average 80,000 people who can now see the World’s Longest Coloured Pencil, measuring over 25 feet! Recently the museum has expanded with a new shop and café and has introduced a popular programme of events throughout the year, including free demonstrations and paid workshops, by professional artists.
