Derwent is pleased to introduce its new XL Charcoal and XL Graphite range, a new range of fine art big bold blocks. The chunky shape is 2cm square and 6cm long making it captivating and great fun to use.

6 colours of XL Graphite come in two warm tones, two cool tones , soft and very soft natural graphite. They are ideal for sensitive line work and subtle blending, to expressive marks and deep tonal work. Derwent XL Graphite is smooth and refined. This soft fine art graphite is also water-soluble so you can even add water to the mix for splashes and washes. On a damp surface they release a creamy strip of live pigment, which when dry can be re-worked with layers of contrasting colours and marks. Try using embossing tools, or lifting out tone and colour with an eraser.

6 colours of XL Charcoal are traditional drawing colours in warm tones including black and white. They feel soft, smooth and velvety, similar to a soft pastel. Derwent XL Charcoal combines the natural qualities of charcoal with the strength and body of a chunky block. It is very opaque – layer colours over one another for the perfect blend of rich tones and organic marks. They produce everything from broad, sweeping marks to the most delicate lines. Feel how smoothly they blend, try layering colours or even adding water.

There are some great accessories to play with to get more from your blocks. The Groove Cube is an ingenious grooved block; simply run your Derwent XL block along one of the ridged sections to carve lines in the block’s surface. Experiment with the different lines and textures you can make.
The Sprinkler allows you to create your own charcoal or graphite powder and the XL grippers allow a steady grip and keep your hands clean when using this exciting medium.
